The heat causes the film to contract, creating a closer-fitting outer covering. This differs from stretch film, which is pulled around a pallet under tension and does not normally require heat.

Protection From Dust and Light Moisture

Heat-shrink sheeting can help contain suitably prepared goods, but it cannot make an unstable pallet safe.
Before wrapping, check that:
- The pallet is sound and suitable for the load
- The weight is distributed evenly
- Cartons and products are stacked securely
- Loose items have been contained
- Goods do not overhang the pallet unnecessarily
- Sharp edges have been covered
Some loads may also require strapping, edge protection or other packaging materials. The finished pallet must still be restrained appropriately inside any delivery vehicle.
Heat-Shrink Sheeting or Pallet Wrap?
The right product depends on the load and the packing process.
Standard stretch wrap is usually quicker for routine pallet containment and does not need heat. It may therefore be more practical for everyday warehouse and dispatch work.
Heat-shrink sheeting may be more suitable when:
- The product is bulky or irregularly shaped
- A closer all-round covering is required
- Standard stretch wrap is difficult to apply neatly
- The business already has suitable heat-shrinking equipment and procedures

Apply Heat Safely

- Complete an appropriate fire and workplace risk assessment
- Remove flammable materials from the area
- Check that the goods do not contain flammable residues or heat-sensitive products

Do not apply heat close to fuels, solvents, aerosols, gas cylinders or unknown chemical containers. A cold wrapping method may be safer where the contents or working environment make heat unsuitable.
